At present, it is roughly estimated that there are gemstone mining operations in the Mogok Stone Tract. These range from individual artisanal miners, to cooperatives, independent miners, semimechanised operations to largescale mining companies working with modern excavators, drillblasting and exploration techniques.

In the beginning, the goldbearing quartz was wrenched from underground veins by backbreaking, dimly lit sweat and blood.
